In the build-up to their crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, India and Maldives are set to face off in a friendly in Shillong on March 19 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. It will be the first international fixture at the venue.

With India yet to win a game since beating Kuwait in November 2023, they will aim to turn things around. Additionally, they have their eyes on a third consecutive qualification for the AFC Asian Cup in 2027, with their campaign kicking off against Bangladesh on March 25. That’s why, the friendly against Maldives serves as a crucial rehearsal for the Blue Tigers.

India’s head coach Manolo Marquez highlighted the importance of the match, emphasising that it serves as a valuable opportunity to test his squad before the key clash against Bangladesh.

“Obviously, we want to win, but the main objective is to arrive in the best condition for the first official game against Bangladesh on Tuesday,” said Marquez.

Ever since Sunil Chhetri’s return from retirement, Marquez has faced numerous questions regarding this. He reiterated his belief in the veteran’s continued importance to the national team, emphasising that performance, not age, is the deciding factor.

“It doesn’t matter if he’s 20, 40, or 87. If Sunil is the player scoring the most goals in the ISL, he will be in the national team,” Marquez affirmed.

Shillong’s weather is known to be unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from 23°C during the day to 14°C at night, often accompanied by clouds and rain. While acknowledging the conditions, Marquez expressed confidence in his players’ adaptability, noting that many of them have the experience of playing at the venue.

“Most of our players have competed in various international venues. They have the experience to handle these conditions well,” he added.

The Spaniard also indicated his intent to utilise all six available substitutions, ensuring that all 17 players get game time. Talking hint about Chhetri’s involvement, Marquez said, “He will play. Let’s see. For sure, he will play some minutes. I don’t know if it will be from the start or off the bench, but he will definitely get some minutes.”

He further explained, “In this game, six substitutions are allowed, and all 17 players could get a chance. I think Sunil will be one of them.”

Maldives head coach Ali Suzain also viewed the friendly as a vital test ahead of their qualifier against the Philippines. “India and Maldives are the strongest sides in the region right now. This match is important for us and the people of Maldives,” Suzain said.

There had initially been uncertainty surrounding the friendly due to logistical challenges Maldives faced while planning their trip to the Philippines. However, they ultimately decided to proceed, acknowledging the significance of the match for their preparations.

“The main problem was the travel. It took us two days to get here, but we are comfortable now, and everything is manageable,” he added.

Marquez concluded the conference by expressing his admiration for Shillong’s passion for football. “I saw the atmosphere during Durand Cup, and it was fantastic. It’s great to play in an environment where fans are enthusiastic. I hope the crowd will cheer and support the team,” he said.
