New Delhi, 30th Sept. President Droupadi Murmu delivered the keynote address at the 10th Convocation Ceremony of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) on Monday. The event was also graced by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog.
During her address, President Murmu honored the contributions of two iconic leaders, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who have been closely associated with the institution. She urged the medical professionals and students to follow their legacy of national service.
Highlighting the indispensable role of doctors, she remarked, “Doctors provide the healing touch to ailing humanity, and only they can make a difference between life and death.” President Murmu emphasized the immense responsibility doctors hold and reminded them to always pair their prescribed treatments with compassion.
Touching on the issue of violence against healthcare professionals, she urged patients and their families to remain calm in trying situations, stressing that no doctor wishes harm on their patients. Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, she praised the dedication of doctors and nurses, saying, “We will always be grateful to them for their life-saving efforts during the pandemic.”
The President also called for a focus on women’s healthcare, highlighting the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in improving women’s access to medical services. She noted the advancements in healthcare over the past decade, including a doubling of postgraduate medical seats and the establishment of new AIIMS institutions.
In his address, Shri J.P. Nadda congratulated the graduating students and reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of medical education. He emphasized that the students are the nation’s “Human Resource capital” for building a better future. Nadda also pointed out the unique challenges faced by doctors in India, where the sheer volume of patients is unmatched globally.
Encouraging the students to utilize their knowledge to enhance the healthcare system, Nadda concluded by calling them the “guardians and saviors of human life and a noble profession.”
Dr. V.K. Paul also echoed the President’s message, highlighting the importance of empathy, excellence, and values in medical practice. He encouraged the students to pursue academia to pass on their knowledge to future generations.
During the ceremony, the first edition of the ABVIMS journal “Sanhita” was released by Shri J.P. Nadda, and degrees were awarded to 36 Super Specialty students.
Several key dignitaries, including Apurva Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Dr. Ajay Shukla, Director of ABVIMS, were also present.
