Chennai, 26th Sept. After heavy rainfall on Wednesday night, the DMK and Congress engaged in a heated exchange on social media over the issue of waterlogging in Chennai.
Congress leader and Sivaganga MP Karti P. Chidambaram shared a news clip showcasing the waterlogged streets, captioning it with a cryptic remark, “Race Road or Rain Road,” while tagging the Greater Chennai Corporation. His post appeared to criticize the corporation’s handling of the situation, especially in light of recent Formula Night races hosted in the city.
In response, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai took a jab at Chidambaram, questioning whether it was feasible to assess the rain’s intensity from indoors.
“Earlier, two-bit trolls were making this noise, asking why the rainwater has not receded even when it was raining. Now a question to ponder: will it be possible to gauge the intensity of the rain within the confines of a room?” Annadurai replied on X.
Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan conducted inspections in the Perambur subway and nearby areas, where significant waterlogging was reported due to the rainfall. She also reviewed ongoing stormwater canal construction projects. The Koyambedu area also faced similar waterlogging issues.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a partly cloudy sky in Chennai, with the likelihood of moderate rain or thunderstorms continuing. Rainfall began around 6 PM on Wednesday and persisted late into the night, leading to power outages and traffic snarls across the city.
From 8:30 AM to 5:30 AM, Nungambakkam recorded 7.42 cm of rain, while Menambakkam saw 7.12 cm. Additional rainfall was noted in Tiruvallur, Vellore, and Cuddalore districts, along with Puducherry. Forecasts from the regional meteorological center indicate light to moderate rains in north Tamil Nadu until the weekend.
