Lucknow, 7th Oct. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Monday that derogatory remarks against deities, revered figures, or saints from any religion or sect are entirely unacceptable and that those who engage in such behavior will be “punished vigorously.” His remarks come in response to recent comments made by Dasna temple priest Yati Narsinghanand against Prophet Muhammad, which have sparked widespread outrage.
During a law and order review meeting with the chief secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and other officials, Adityanath stated, “Anarchy, vandalism, or arson in the name of protest is not acceptable,” warning that anyone who attempts such actions will face severe consequences.
He reiterated the need for mutual respect among all religions and sects, stating, “Every citizen should have a sense of gratitude towards great men, but this cannot be forced or imposed on anyone.” Adityanath made it clear that any individual who disrespects religious sentiments will be held accountable under the law.
These statements follow calls from several Muslim organizations and political parties, including the BSP, National Conference, and Samajwadi Party, demanding action against Narsinghanand. An FIR was filed against the priest on October 3, alleging that he made derogatory remarks during an event at Hindi Bhavan in Lohiya Naga, in violation of Section 302 of BNS, which deals with offenses intended to hurt religious feelings.
Furthermore, another FIR was lodged against Narsinghanand’s disciples for making objectionable remarks, as evidenced by videos circulating on social media.
The Chief Minister also instructed police administration to ensure the upcoming festivals are celebrated joyfully and harmoniously, directing them to identify individuals who may disrupt peace and to take strict action against them. He underscored the importance of women’s safety, advocating for increased foot patrols and police presence in crowded areas to ensure their protection and convenience.
