New Delhi, 30th Sept. The Office of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, announced the immediate enforcement of Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on Monday, September 30, in response to anticipated protests and demonstrations in the capital during the first week of October 2024. The decision comes amid rising political tensions over a range of issues, including proposed amendments to the Waqf Board, the Shahi Idgah dispute, pending DUSU election results, state assembly elections, and upcoming festivals.
Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora issued the order, citing the “sensitive atmosphere” in Delhi. In a statement, Arora explained that the law and order situation necessitated heightened security measures, particularly in the districts of New Delhi, North, and Central, as well as police stations with jurisdiction over Delhi’s state borders. The restrictions will be in place for six days, from September 30 to October 5, 2024.
The order prohibits the assembly of five or more unauthorized individuals, carrying of weapons or any potentially dangerous objects such as banners, lathis, and brickbats, and unauthorized sit-ins or dharnas in public areas. Violations will be punishable under Section 223 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
“In view of the above, I, Sanjay Arora, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, in exercise of the powers conferred to me by Section 163 of BNSS, as per the Government of India’s notification, hereby issue this written order for the specified districts and police stations for six days,” the statement from the Commissioner’s office read.
The move aims to prevent potential unrest and ensure public safety during a period marked by heightened political and social activities in the capital.
