New Delhi, 27th Sept. In a decisive intervention, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena reversed the postponement of the election for the last vacant seat on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee.
The LG instructed MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar to submit a report by 10 PM on Thursday regarding the conduct of the election.
The LG’s directive came after Mayor Shelly Oberoi adjourned the MCD House meeting until October 5, following disruptions over the frisking of councillors. Mayor Oberoi called the security checks unprecedented and insulting, arguing that it was the first time councillors had been subjected to such a procedure.
To ensure the election process moved forward, the LG ordered that the Deputy Mayor be appointed as the presiding officer if the Mayor refused to conduct the elections. If both were unavailable or unwilling, the senior-most member of the House would preside over the elections, as per the LG’s instructions.
After the order, the MCD Commissioner directed that the election for the 6th member of the Standing Committee be held as scheduled.
