New Delhi, 16th Oct. For the third consecutive day, Delhi’s air quality stayed in the ‘poor’ category, with certain areas recording Air Quality Index (AQI) levels that dipped into the ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ ranges. The decline in air quality has been attributed to multiple factors, including emissions from transportation and stubble burning in neighboring states.
According to the Centre’s Decision Support System for Air Quality Management in Delhi, transportation emissions contribute roughly 19.2% to the city’s air pollution. Additionally, stubble burning incidents in nearby states are worsening the situation. Satellite data on Wednesday reported 99 fire incidents in Punjab, 14 in Haryana, 59 in Uttar Pradesh, and one within Delhi itself.
As winter nears, residents are already feeling the effects of deteriorating air conditions. The AQI reading at the main monitoring station on Wednesday morning stood at 230, marking a decline from Tuesday’s reading of 207. Some stations, such as ITO, Chandni Chowk, and Lodhi Road, recorded ‘moderate’ air quality. However, areas like Anand Vihar reached a severe AQI level of 430, while Mundka reported a ‘very poor’ level of 327.
The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 35.4°C, which is 2.2 degrees above the normal range for this time of year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The minimum temperature settled at 19°C, slightly below the season’s average, with relative humidity ranging between 78% and 57% throughout the day.
Looking ahead, the IMD forecasts a mainly clear sky for Thursday, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 34°C and 18°C, respectively. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good,” 51 to 100 “satisfactory,” 101 to 200 “moderate,” 201 to 300 “poor,” 301 to 400 “very poor,” and 401 to 500 “severe.” As conditions remain challenging, authorities urge residents to take necessary precautions.
