‘Deities Should Be Kept Away from Politics’: SC on Tirupati Laddu Row

New Delhi, 30th Sept. The Supreme Court of India, while hearing the Tirupati Laddu controversy, stated that deities should be kept away from politics. This case involves allegations of adulteration in the ghee used to make the famous Tirupati Balaji temple’s laddu prasadam during the tenure of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government in Andhra Pradesh.

The Court questioned the Andhra Pradesh government on the necessity of approaching the media after ordering a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the matter. The Supreme Court remarked sternly, asking, “What was the need to go to the press until the results of the SIT investigation were available?”

The controversy erupted when laboratory tests of ghee supplied to the Tirumala temple trust revealed the presence of lard (pig fat), tallow (sheep fat), and fish oil. This ghee was reportedly used for making the renowned Tirupati laddu. Following these findings, several individuals demanded that temples be freed from government control and handed over to Hindu religious institutions.

The Supreme Court’s bench also informed the Andhra Pradesh government’s lawyer that the lab reports indicated the tested ghee was of inferior quality. The Court reiterated that deities should remain uninvolved in political matters. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasized to the Supreme Court that the issue at hand pertains to faith, stating that if adulterated ghee had been used, it is unacceptable.

Earlier this week, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and former president of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), Y.V. Subba Reddy, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP from the YSR Congress Party, filed petitions regarding the issue. The petitions are currently being heard by a bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Vishwanathan.
