Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) later today at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, commonly known as Chepauk. CSK has dominated RCB at this venue, leading 8-1 in head-to-head encounters across nine IPL games. Interestingly, RCB’s only win at Chepauk came way back in the inaugural season of 2008, when they defeated CSK by 14 runs.

That match featured two modern-day legends, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, both of whom will be in action today as well. However, what makes the 2008 fixture even more fascinating is that three players from CSK’s lineup that day are now part of different IPL coaching setups.
Stephen Fleming (CSK Head Coach)
Fleming, who opened the innings for CSK in that match, played a solid knock of 45 off 40 balls. He put up a 60-run partnership in 9.1 overs with Parthiv Patel. However, CSK collapsed, losing eight wickets for just 52 runs and ultimately falling 14 runs short of the target. Fleming is now CSK’s long-serving head coach.
Parthiv Patel (Gujarat Titans Assistant and Batting Coach)
Parthiv, who was CSK’s wicketkeeper-batter in 2008, contributed 24 runs off 29 balls. He is one of the few players to have represented both CSK and RCB in the IPL. Currently, he serves as the assistant and batting coach for Gujarat Titans.
Muttiah Muralitharan (SRH Spin Bowling Coach and Mentor)
Muralitharan bowled an economical spell of 4-0-19-1 in that match but could not turn the game in CSK’s favour. Since 2015, he has been the spin bowling coach and mentor for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Interestingly, for RCB, Rahul Dravid captained the side in that match and top-scored with 47 off 39 balls. Fast forward to 2025, and Dravid is now the head coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR) in this IPL season.
