Kolkata, 15th Sept. A local court on Sunday remanded Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, to CBI custody till September 17. Both were presented before the court by the central agency in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run hospital.
According to a CBI officer, “We have secured their custody for three days until September 17. They will be questioned together as both have played significant roles in the RG Kar case.” The CBI had arrested Mondal on Saturday evening and added charges of evidence tampering against Ghosh, who is already in judicial custody for a separate corruption case related to RG Kar Hospital.
Mondal faces accusations of evidence tampering, delaying the FIR registration, and other related offenses. The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital falls under the jurisdiction of Tala Police Station.
Mondal was detained after allegedly failing to provide satisfactory answers during questioning. The CBI has suggested that a larger conspiracy may be involved and claimed that both Ghosh and Mondal played crucial roles in the crime. The two were reportedly in contact regarding the rape-murder case, with Ghosh issuing instructions to Mondal.
The CBI highlighted in court that Mondal was informed of the doctor’s death around 10 am on August 9, but the FIR was only lodged around 11 pm. The agency accused both individuals of attempting to downplay the incident and shield the crime. It was noted that the case should have been treated as a suo motu matter from the start.
Ghosh was previously arrested on September 2 for financial irregularities at the hospital. The doctor’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9. So far, three people have been arrested in connection with the rape-murder case.
