Court Directs FIR Against Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Over Electoral Bonds ‘Extortion’ Allegations

Bengaluru, 28th September. A special court in Bengaluru has directed the police to file an FIR against Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman over allegations of ‘extortion’ involving the electoral bonds scheme. The order came in response to a plea filed by Janaadhikaara Sangharsha Parishath, a Karnataka-based NGO, which accused the minister and others of misusing electoral bonds to extort funds.

The court’s directive follows the Supreme Court’s annulment of the electoral bonds scheme earlier this year, declaring it unconstitutional. The apex court ruled that the scheme violated both the Right to Information (RTI) Act and Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and expression. The Supreme Court also instructed the State Bank of India (SBI) to halt the issuance of electoral bonds and publish details of all donors under the scheme.

Reports indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received the majority of donations through this scheme, amounting to Rs 6,986.5 crore. Several of the BJP’s donors are also reportedly under investigation by central agencies.

The Bengaluru court has set October 10 for the next hearing in the case.
