New Delhi, 22nd Oct. President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday presented the fifth National Water Awards in New Delhi, emphasizing the critical importance of water as a basic necessity and fundamental human right. She remarked that a clean and prosperous society cannot thrive without ensuring access to clean water, particularly for underprivileged communities affected by poor sanitation and water scarcity.
In her address, the President noted the finite nature of fresh water resources and criticized the lack of effective water conservation and management practices that have led to pollution and depletion. She commended the Government of India for its initiatives promoting water conservation and harvesting.
Highlighting traditional practices, President Murmu recalled how ancestors constructed ponds and reservoirs to manage water resources effectively. She cautioned against encroachment on these vital resources, which can exacerbate water shortages during droughts and lead to flooding during heavy rains.
The President underscored that conserving and enhancing water resources is a collective responsibility and called for public participation to build a Water-Secure India. She encouraged individuals to adopt small but impactful practices, such as conserving water at home and restoring traditional reservoirs.
The National Water Awards aim to raise awareness about the significance of water and encourage the adoption of best practices in water usage. This year’s awards were presented across nine categories, including Best State, Best District, Best Village Panchayat, and Best Urban Local Body, among others. President Murmu expressed confidence that the awardees’ “Best Practices” would inspire widespread adoption and contribute to effective water resource management.
