The ongoing protests at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) over the Telangana government’s plan to develop an IT park on a 400-acre land parcel have reignited the debate on land use, environmental conservation, and student activism. As students and activists rally against what they call “land encroachment,” the silence of the ruling Congress is raising eyebrows. Is the party strategically avoiding controversy, or is it simply indifferent to student concerns?
The Government’s Justification vs. The Students’ Stand
The Telangana government insists that the land in question legally belongs to the state, not the university. However, the UoH administration contradicts this claim, asserting that boundaries remain disputed. The Telangana High Court has temporarily halted all development work on the site, but students and environmentalists are demanding a permanent halt.
The student protests have been gaining momentum, with the University of Hyderabad Students’ Union (UoHSU) launching a relay hunger strike and calling for a boycott of classes. Civil society leaders and activists have also condemned the state government’s actions, highlighting the ecological importance of the Kancha Gachibowli urban forest. BRS leader KT Rama Rao has promised that if his party returns to power, he will transform the land into an eco-park. But what about Congress, the party in power right now?
Congress’ Deafening Silence
Despite the protests escalating into a major issue, the Congress government has chosen to remain largely silent. This raises several uncomfortable questions:
- Is Congress hesitant to take a stand because it fears alienating corporate investors who support IT expansion in Telangana?
- Is the party wary of confronting student activists, who have historically opposed BJP and TRS (now BRS), and could be potential allies in the future?
- Is this silence part of a broader political strategy—watching how the situation unfolds before making a calculated move?
Regardless of the reasons, Congress’ inaction risks portraying it as either indecisive or complicit in the commercialization of land at the cost of environmental preservation.
A Missed Political Opportunity?
Student movements have historically shaped political discourse in India. The anti-CAA protests, farmers’ agitation, and various campus-led movements have played a key role in challenging governments. The Congress, which often claims to stand for the voice of the youth, now finds itself in an awkward position.
This situation presents a golden opportunity for the party to showcase its commitment to sustainable development and engage with students constructively. Instead, by choosing silence, Congress is creating a vacuum that other parties, particularly the BRS and BJP, are quickly trying to fill.
ABVP’s Entry—A Calculated BJP Move?
Adding another layer to the issue is the entry of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. The ABVP’s demand for Congress to withdraw the land auction raises an interesting question: Is the BJP using the protests to corner the Congress in Telangana? Given the BJP’s growing ambitions in South India, it would not be surprising if it sees this as an opportunity to position itself as the voice of students and environmentalists.
What Should Congress Do?
With the Telangana High Court intervening and protests gaining traction, the Congress government must act swiftly. It must either engage with students, clarify its stance, and propose a middle path—or risk losing credibility among young voters. The longer the party remains silent, the more it risks being perceived as indifferent or, worse, complicit in a move that benefits corporate interests at the cost of environmental conservation.
If Congress fails to act decisively, this issue could snowball into a political setback, with students, environmentalists, and opposition parties uniting against it. The question is: Will the Congress finally break its silence, or will it allow others to dictate the narrative?
