Khatua, 28th September. With assembly elections underway in Jammu and Kashmir, Congress candidate Kajal Rajput from the Bani constituency held an election rally on Saturday in Kathua district. The rally came ahead of her filing the nomination for the election, during which she raised pressing issues affecting the region, including lack of basic infrastructure, healthcare, and opportunities for women.

In her address, Rajput focused on the absence of proper road connectivity, unreliable electricity, and water shortages that continue to burden residents. She criticized the condition of hospitals and health centers, pointing out that they are understaffed and lack proper facilities. “In this area, there are no roads, and people face many problems, including getting electricity and water. Our hospitals are not in good condition, and we lack staff in health centers. Education is also poor due to the shortage of teachers, and women have very few opportunities,” Rajput said while speaking to ANI.

Rajput also emphasized the challenges women face in the constituency, noting that while there is talk of women’s reservations, the reality on the ground is very different. “There is a lot of discussion about women’s reservation, but when you look at the actual situation, women have very few opportunities. I am grateful that my party has given me this chance to represent women. I will work for the women and the youth,” she said.

The Congress candidate further highlighted the bleak future facing the region’s youth due to unemployment. She condemned the government’s handling of their protests for jobs, stating, “The future for our youth seems dark as they don’t have jobs. When they demand their rights, they face police action. We will win, and I will work hard to ensure better opportunities for both women and the youth.”

Rajput expressed her desire to set an example for young girls in the region, encouraging them to be confident and get involved in issues that matter. “I will not waste the opportunity I have been given. I will work hard for my people, and we will win this seat. I want to inspire the girls in my area to be more courageous and confident,” she said.

Rajput also highlighted the difficulties of campaigning in the hilly terrain of the constituency, where many areas are only accessible by foot. Despite the challenges, she remains optimistic, noting the overwhelming support she has received. “It’s the love of the people that has brought me here. I will continue to maintain their trust and raise my voice for them, just as I always have.”

Rajput’s candidacy has generated considerable interest, as she is the first woman to run in such a prominent role from the area. “This is the first time a woman is fighting the election from this region in this way, and people are very interested in my campaign. I have received a lot of love and support,” she remarked.

The third and final phase of polling is scheduled for October 1, with vote counting set for October 8. These elections are the first in the Union Territory since the abrogation of Article 370 and the first assembly elections in ten years.
