Beijing has strongly condemned the trade war initiated by former US President Donald Trump, vowing to take countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests. Hours after Trump imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, China’s foreign ministry issued a statement denouncing the move, calling it a violation of global trade rules that could have broader consequences, including disruptions in US-China cooperation on drug control efforts.

China warned that escalating tariffs would not resolve economic concerns in the US and would ultimately harm both economies. The foreign ministry emphasized that “trade and tariff wars have no winners”, accusing the US of severely violating World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules through its unilateral tariff hikes.

The statement also addressed concerns surrounding fentanyl, a synthetic opioid linked to thousands of overdose deaths in the US. China highlighted that it has taken strict measures to control fentanyl production and trade, cooperating with Washington on the issue. Beijing reminded the US that in 2019, at Washington’s request, China classified all fentanyl-related substances as controlled substances, demonstrating its commitment to international cooperation in tackling the opioid crisis.

Despite China’s condemnation, Trump’s administration maintained that the tariffs were necessary to address trade imbalances and protect American industries. However, Beijing’s pledge to retaliate signaled an escalation in the US-China trade tensions, further straining diplomatic and economic relations between the two superpowers.
