Canadian PM Trudeau Announces 25% Retaliatory Tariffs On US Imports

Published:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a robust countermeasure in response to newly imposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports. Trudeau sharply criticized the move by President Donald Trump as economically unsound and unnecessary, marking a significant turning point in the ongoing trade confrontation.

In response, Trudeau announced immediate countermeasures, imposing 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, with plans for additional $125 billion in tariffs if Washington does not reverse course within three weeks.

Trudeau condemned the U.S. decision during a public address on Tuesday, asserting that the tariffs are both ill-conceived and harmful to the global economic order. “There is absolutely no justification or need whatsoever for these tariffs today,” Trudeau said, underscoring his government’s commitment to defend Canada’s economic interests.

Trudeau also took to social media to make his intentions clear. He wrote, “The moment U.S. tariffs came into effect this morning, so did the Canadian response. Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs against $155 billion of American products. Starting with $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and the remaining $125 billion in 21 days’ time.”

The trade dispute between the U.S. and its largest trading partners Canada, Mexico, and China has now reached a boiling point. Trump’s tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports came into force just hours before Trudeau’s countermeasure announcement.
