Amid escalating tensions between India and Canada, a Canadian court has granted bail to Khalistani terrorist Arshdeep Singh Gill, also known as Arsh Dalla, the self-proclaimed chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). Dalla was released on a surety bond of $30,000, even as India continues to push for his extradition to face charges of terrorism and other serious crimes. His next court hearing is scheduled for February 24, 2025.
Dalla, arrested in October in Halton, Canada, following an attack by unidentified shooters that left him injured, has been a central figure in India’s anti-terror investigations. Designated a terrorist in January 2023, he faces over 50 cases ranging from murder and extortion to terror financing.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs recently confirmed that Ontario’s courts had listed their extradition request for a hearing. As part of its efforts, the ministry has also sought verification of financial documents tied to Dalla, submitted last year. Officials have labeled him a “proclaimed offender” under Indian law, highlighting his alleged role in orchestrating terrorist acts and financing extremist activities.
Dalla’s rise from a local gangster in Punjab to one of India’s most wanted terrorists has been marked by violence and evasion. Originating from Dala village in Punjab’s Moga district, he began his criminal career in local disputes.
In 2020, he moved to Canada on a study visa but returned briefly to India after a conflict with rival gangster Sukha Lamme. Dalla and his associates allegedly killed Lamme before fleeing back to Canada, where he consolidated his position within the Khalistani network. Taking over KTF’s leadership following the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year, Dalla became a critical player in anti-India activities.
The bail decision adds another layer of complexity to the already strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada. Relations soured earlier this year following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing—claims that New Delhi has categorically denied.
