New Delhi, 16 Jan: In a landmark decision, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission to review and revise the salaries of central government employees and the allowances of pensioners.

Announcing the decision on Thursday, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that the Commission’s chairman and two members would be appointed shortly. The 7th Pay Commission, which was set up in 2016, is set to complete its term in 2026.

“The government is committed to ensuring fair pay structures and addressing the concerns of employees and pensioners,” Vaishnaw added.

The move is expected to impact over 47 lakh central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners, with recommendations anticipated to focus on salary revisions, allowances, and potential restructuring of pay scales.

Further details on the Commission’s timeline and framework are expected to be released after the appointment of its members.
