Cabinet Approves Recommendations for Simultaneous Elections

Published:

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 18th Sept. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections on Wednesday. This committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, has proposed measures to streamline elections across India, aiming for greater efficiency and reduced electoral costs.

The practice of simultaneous elections was in place from 1951 to 1967. The Law Commission’s 170th report (1999) and the Parliamentary Committee’s 79th Report (2015) both advocated for holding one national and state elections every five years.

The committee consulted a wide range of stakeholders, including political parties and experts, and found broad support for the move. Key recommendations include conducting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously in the first phase, followed by local body elections within 100 days in the second phase. The plan also proposes using a common electoral roll for all elections.

The report is available online for public access, and detailed nationwide discussions are set to follow. An implementation group will be constituted to oversee the process.
