New Delhi, 22nd Oct. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday emphasized the importance of BRICS as a vital platform for global dialogue and cooperation ahead of his visit to Kazan, Russia, for the 16th BRICS summit. In his departure statement on Tuesday, Modi noted that BRICS has emerged as a key player in addressing issues on the global developmental agenda, from climate change to multilateralism and economic collaboration.

“The expansion of BRICS last year, with the inclusion of new members, has increased its inclusivity and its global agenda for the common good,” Modi said. He also underscored India’s commitment to furthering cooperation within BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

During the two-day summit, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, among others. This will be the first BRICS summit since its expansion in Johannesburg in 2023, which saw the addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

The summit, hosted by Russia, is seen as an opportunity for non-Western powers to assert their influence amid global conflicts, including the Ukraine war and tensions in West Asia. Modi also highlighted the importance of strengthening India-Russia ties, describing the partnership as a “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.”

Modi’s visit to Kazan follows his earlier trip to Moscow in July 2024, where he held talks with President Putin. “I look forward to meeting other BRICS leaders and discussing a wide range of subjects,” he said in a post on X, previously Twitter.

The BRICS grouping began in 2006 with Russia, India, and China, and expanded to include South Africa in 2010. Last year’s expansion was the first since then, adding several influential countries to its ranks.
