New Delhi, 24th Sept. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday slammed Delhi Chief Minister Atishi for leaving the Chief Minister’s chair empty on her first day in office, an act they termed a “mockery of the Constitution.” This incident unfolded on Monday (September 23), when Atishi officially took charge and symbolically opted to sit on a different chair, leaving the seat traditionally occupied by the Chief Minister unoccupied for AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva was quick to respond, questioning Atishi’s commitment to her new role. “If she did not want to sit on the chair, why did she become the chief minister? Why did she take an oath?” he asked, emphasizing the practical implications of her actions. Sachdeva further lamented the high electricity bills and drinking water issues faced by Delhi residents, stating, “If she does not sit on the chair, who will work for Delhi?”
The BJP’s criticism did not stop there. Pradeep Bhandari, a spokesperson for the party, likened Atishi and Kejriwal’s governance style to the “Lalu-Rabri model” and the “Manmohan-Sonia model,” suggesting a corrupt government under their leadership. “They want to run a corrupt government. The people of Delhi are asking why a rubber stamp or puppet CM is made the Chief Minister,” Bhandari asserted.
Adding to the chorus of criticism, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari expressed concern over Atishi’s apparent disrespect for the Chief Minister’s post. “If being the Chief Minister herself, she considers someone else as the CM, this amounts to showing disrespect to the CM’s post and the Constitution,” Tiwari stated.
In contrast, Atishi expressed her intentions to lead with integrity and respect for the office. Taking inspiration from Bharat, the brother of Lord Ram, she said, “Just as Bharat ji worked by keeping Lord Shri Ram’s ‘khadaun’, I will work as the Chief Minister for the next four months.” She further emphasized her loyalty to Kejriwal, stating, “This chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal,” and assured that it would remain unoccupied until the upcoming elections.
The political landscape in Delhi continues to heat up as the AAP and BJP trade barbs over the Chief Ministership, showcasing a deepening divide between the parties.
