Madurai, 3rd Jan. Several Tamil Nadu BJP Mahila Morcha leaders were detained or placed under house arrest on Friday as they attempted to stage a rally from Madurai to Chennai, demanding justice for a student sexually assaulted on the Anna University campus.
Detentions and Protests
Prominent BJP leaders, including Khushbu Sundar, TN Mahila Morcha president Umarathi Rajan, and BJP MLA Dr. C Saraswathi, were detained in Chennai. Protesters accused the DMK government of suppressing a peaceful march for justice. In Madurai, BJP women members staged a demonstration, with one dressed as Kannagi from Tamil literature to symbolize justice.
Condemnations from BJP Leadership
BJP state chief K Annamalai criticized the DMK government, alleging its oppressive stance against peaceful protests. He accused the administration of silencing voices seeking justice while allowing offenders to roam freely. National organizing general secretary B L Santhosh and other leaders condemned the arrests as an attack on democratic principles.
Calls for Accountability
BJP leaders demanded an impartial inquiry into the sexual assault case, urging Chief Minister M K Stalin to transfer the investigation to the CBI. BJP national co-in-charge Dr. Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy called the government’s actions anti-democratic and a failure to ensure women’s safety.
The incident has sparked widespread debate over governance and accountability in Tamil Nadu. The DMK government is yet to respond to these allegations.
