BJP Leader Locket Chatterjee Joins Ram Navami Procession in Kolkata, Slams West Bengal Police

Published:

Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Locket Chatterjee participated in a Ram Navami procession in Kolkata on Sunday and launched a scathing attack on the West Bengal government, alleging that the state police were acting like cadres of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Addressing the media during the celebrations, Chatterjee said, “People are on the roads to take part in the procession as we are celebrating Ram Navami. Ram is all over the country and in West Bengal. We don’t need anyone’s permission to celebrate Ram Navami in Jadavpur University. Only West Bengal is a place where we need permission to celebrate our religious festival.” She further alleged that “the police here work like TMC cadres and not like law enforcement officials.”

The General Student Union performed puja on the occasion of Ram Navami within the Jadavpur University campus, despite the administration allegedly denying permission for celebrations. The university reportedly cited the absence of the Vice Chancellor as the reason for not permitting the event formally.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her Ram Navami greetings through a post on social media platform X, stating, “Greetings to all on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami. I appeal to all to maintain and uphold the values of peace, prosperity and development of all. I wish the celebration of the Ram Navami all success in a peaceful manner.”

A grand Shobha Yatra was scheduled in Hooghly, while security was intensified in Howrah, with large crowds thronging temples and processions being held across the state as part of Ram Navami 2025 celebrations.

Earlier in the day, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh also conveyed Ram Navami greetings and urged law enforcement authorities to ensure peaceful conduct of festivities. He emphasized that the Hindu community must be allowed to celebrate the festival according to their traditions, without any obstacles.

Ram Navami marks the birth of Lord Ram, a revered deity in Hinduism and a symbol of righteousness and virtue. It coincides with the ninth day of Navratri, when Maa Siddhidatri, the ninth incarnation of Goddess Durga, is worshipped. Devotees seek her blessings for spiritual strength, wisdom, and success.

As Ram Navami processions continue across the country, the spotlight remains on West Bengal, where the festival has yet again taken on political undertones amid ongoing tensions between the BJP and the TMC-led state government.
