Kedarnath, 25th Sept. The Shri Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee has decided to introduce regular checks and develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to maintain the purity and sanctity of the prasad offered to the deities. This initiative aims to ensure that only high-quality offerings are made at the revered temples.
Ajendra Ajay, chairperson of the committee, highlighted the importance of monitoring the quality of the prasad, including the materials used, storage conditions, and where the prasad is sold. “The chances of the prasad being impure are minimal since it primarily consists of dry fruits,” he explained, while urging devotees to offer only the highest quality items at the temple.
State’s Food Safety Commissioner J C Khandwal proposed that a standard operating procedure be put in place. This would include checking the licenses of the shops from which purchases were made for the ‘prasad’. “The status of the food license, the manufacturing and expiry date, and storage measures should be regularly checked,” he said.
Additionally, mandatory verification of FSSAI and AGMARK licenses will be enforced, ensuring that logos and holograms used on products are genuine. Vendors will also receive training on food safety regulations to further safeguard the purity of offerings.
Meanwhile, in Lucknow, at the entrance of the Mankameshwar temple, a notice advises devotees to only offer dry fruits or home-cooked prasad, barring shop-bought items due to the concerns raised after the Tirupati incident. Other temples in the city have issued similar instructions. This policy is a reversal from March 2023, when Mahant Divyagiri had encouraged devotees to support local shopkeepers by purchasing prasad from them.
This move is seen as a step towards strengthening food safety measures across religious sites while ensuring the continued sanctity of offerings made at these holy temples.
