Mumbai, 24th Sept. Akshay Shinde, the primary accused in the Badlapur school sex abuse case, died on Monday during an exchange of gunfire with police while attempting to escape. Initial reports indicate that Shinde snatched a firearm from a police officer and opened fire at law enforcement personnel. In the ensuing chaos, one police officer sustained injuries.
Shinde’s ex-wife had filed a case against him for unnatural sexual offenses, leading to an investigation by the Thane Crime Branch. An order for Shinde’s transport from Taloja Jail to Badlapur was issued by the court just a day prior to the incident. While en route, near the Mumbra bypass, Shinde seized a revolver from an officer and fired three rounds before police returned fire, critically injuring him. He was subsequently rushed to Kalwa Hospital in Thane, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde provided details about the incident, confirming that the accused opened fire during the police escort. “API Nilesh More was shot at, and police acted in self-defense,” he stated, emphasizing that further information would be released following a thorough investigation.
The incident has sparked outrage, with NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule criticizing the Mahayuti government for what she described as a breakdown of law enforcement and the justice system. “The handling of the Badlapur sexual assault case of two minor girls is shocking. The delay in filing an FIR and the subsequent death of the prime accused in custody raises serious concerns about justice,” Sule stated.
Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole echoed these sentiments, demanding accountability and swift action against all involved parties. “We call for a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure no accused escapes justice,” he urged.
In a related development, the chairman and secretary of the Badlapur school where the sexual assault occurred have approached the Bombay High Court seeking pre-arrest bail. They face charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for their alleged negligence in reporting the incident. The court is set to hear their plea on October 1.
