Back in Bengaluru, Siraj rediscovers his appetite for a scrap

Mohammed Siraj vs RCB, IPL 2025 (PC: IPL)

In three years, Mohammed Siraj had turned himself into India’s go-to bowler. And when we look back, it was only fitting that his teammates handed him the tricolour during the team’s victory march at the Gabba in 2021. He was so much more than a cricketer. He was a young boy who had become a man in the course of the two months in Australia. He was subjected to racist taunts in Australia. Abuse and barracking. It did not matter to him. Siraj is the new India that has learnt to speak out.

Always fight when the going is tough. Give it back, as they say. It is no longer about soft-pedaling. Or just taking it. If you give it, you will get it back and more – that is what this new India is all about. Siraj stands for it, and there is no holding back.

That’s what was show in Bengaluru. He was not retained by RCB and it was a just call. He had lost form and it hasn’t been easy for him. Getting dropped from the Indian white-ball team was the final nail. Siraj needed to come back, and there was no better game than this against RCB. Against MI, he had started to look the part. Rohit Sharma faced the brunt of Siraj starting to look like the Siraj we know. And then, tonight. Three wickets in four overs for just 20 runs, it was a spell that helped set the game up.

At no point was Siraj overawed. Like he said to us, bowling to Virat Kohli and Phil Salt was a challenge and he relished the opportunity. He knew it would be hostile at the Chinnaswamy, but that’s what brings the best out of him. The competitiveness and the pushback. In every sense, it is a new start for Siraj. The fight – that’s what the real Siraj legacy is all about.
