New Delhi, 24th Sept. President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 16th Assembly of the Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) in New Delhi on Tuesday. The event is hosted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.
In her address, President Murmu highlighted the crucial role played by the CAG of India in ensuring transparency and accountability in public finance. She noted that the Indian Constitution grants the CAG a wide mandate and complete autonomy, allowing the institution to uphold the high ethical standards envisioned by the Constitution-makers.
President Murmu emphasized that public sector audits now extend beyond traditional financial reviews, evaluating the effectiveness of public welfare schemes to ensure equitable access for all citizens. She stressed the importance of keeping pace with technological advancements, as modern governance increasingly relies on digital platforms and infrastructure.
As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and geo-spatial tools shape governance, the President noted that audit practices must evolve accordingly. She highlighted the role of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in revolutionizing public service delivery and called for a focus on inclusivity to ensure marginalized groups are not left behind in the digital economy.
President Murmu also underlined the critical role of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in upholding transparency in financial management, ensuring public resources are used effectively and ethically. She emphasized that audits enhance public confidence in governance by safeguarding public funds.
Congratulating SAI India for assuming the Chairmanship of ASOSAI from 2024 to 2027, President Murmu expressed confidence that India’s leadership would foster greater cooperation and innovation among member nations.
The 16th ASOSAI Assembly brings together experts and leaders in public auditing from across Asia, marking a significant platform for collaboration in ensuring effective governance.
