Assam’s Economy Doubled in Six Years, Emerging as Investment Hub: PM Modi

Guwahati- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment & Infrastructure Summit 2025 in Guwahati today, emphasizing Assam’s growing role as a key investment hub. He stated that Assam’s dynamic workforce and rapid economic growth were transforming it into a leading destination for businesses.

Assam’s Economic Growth and Industrial Progress

PM Modi noted that since the first edition of Advantage Assam in 2018, the state’s economy has doubled from ₹2.75 lakh crore to nearly ₹6 lakh crore. He credited this transformation to the Centre and state governments’ concerted efforts, emphasizing major investments in Assam’s infrastructure and economic policies.

He highlighted Assam’s connectivity advancements, stating that in the last decade, the state witnessed a fourfold increase in its railway budget to ₹10,000 crore. Over 60 railway stations are being modernized, and the first semi-high-speed train between Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri is now operational. Additionally, air connectivity has expanded from seven to nearly 30 routes.

The Prime Minister underscored the peace and stability in Assam, with numerous accords signed to resolve long-standing disputes, fostering a business-friendly environment.

Strengthening Manufacturing and Infrastructure

PM Modi stressed that India is advancing its manufacturing sector, with a focus on low-cost production in pharmaceuticals, electronics, and automobiles. He pointed out Assam’s significant role in this transformation, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing. The recent inauguration of the Tata Semiconductor Assembly & Test facility in Jagiroad was cited as a major milestone.

He also noted Assam’s importance in India’s natural gas industry, contributing over 50% of the country’s onshore gas production. The Namrup-4 plant, approved in the Union Budget, will further boost Assam’s industrial strength.

Assam’s Role in India’s Renewable Energy Mission

PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to green energy, stating that the world views India’s renewable energy policies as a model. He highlighted India’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity and producing 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Assam, with its rich natural resources, is poised to become a leader in sustainable energy initiatives.

Vision for Assam’s Future

The Prime Minister projected that Assam is set to become a $150 billion economy by 2030. He urged industries to capitalize on Assam’s strategic location and government policies to drive investments.

Calling for collaborative efforts, PM Modi reiterated that Northeast India would play a pivotal role in India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He assured investors and business leaders of the government’s full support in their journey towards ‘Viksit Bharat’.

The event was attended by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Ministers Dr. S Jaishankar, Sarbananda Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, and other dignitaries.
