Karimganj, 20th Sept. Assam Police have repelled four Bangladeshi nationals from near the international border in Karimganj district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced. This incident is part of a broader effort to maintain security along the Indo-Bangladesh border, with about 25 infiltrators sent back to Bangladesh this month alone.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma stated, “Maintaining strict vigil along the Indo-Bangladesh border, @assampolice identified four Bangladeshi nationals near the border in Karimganj.” The individuals, identified as Romida Begum, Abdul Elahi, Marijna Begum, and Abdul Sukkur, were immediately returned to Bangladesh.
The Chief Minister commended the police for their efforts, adding, “Good job Team!” Since the start of political unrest in Bangladesh, around 50 individuals have been pushed back from Assam, with Sarma noting that illegal immigrants often use the state as a transit point to reach southern cities for work in the textile industry.
In response to the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) has heightened surveillance along the 1,885 km Indo-Bangladesh border in the Northeast. Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, confirmed that the state police are also on high alert to prevent illegal entry into Assam.
