Guwahati- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the upcoming Electronic City in Jagi Road, which will house India’s first semiconductor plant, will be named after the late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting to honor Tata, who passed away on October 9, 2024.
“In recognition of the contribution of the Tata Group and late Ratan Tata, the state cabinet has decided to name the entire area—covering the semiconductor plant, electronic park, and proposed Electronic City township—as Ratan Tata Electronic City,” Sarma said.
He credited Tata’s bold decision to establish a semiconductor plant in Assam as a game changer, which has sparked interest from other top industrialists in investing in the state.
The upcoming Ratan Tata Electronic City will be Northeast India’s first dedicated hub for semiconductors and advanced electronics.
Tata had a longstanding association with Assam, with the Tata Group making early investments in the state’s tea industry. The latest milestone was the ₹27,000 crore chip assembly plant, set to position Assam as a key semiconductor hub.
In recognition of his contributions, Tata was conferred with the Assam Baibhav, the state’s highest civilian award, in 2022.
Apart from his industrial ventures, Tata made exceptional contributions to cancer care in Assam. His vision was to support poor patients who could not afford expensive treatments, leaving behind a lasting impact on healthcare in the state.
