Asaram Granted Fresh Bail, Survivor’s Family Fears for Safety

Published:

Self-styled godman Asaram, serving a life sentence for raping a minor, has been granted fresh interim bail for three months on medical grounds by the Gujarat High Court. The decision has sparked concerns from the survivor’s family, who fear for their safety.

The victim’s father, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur, expressed shock over Asaram receiving repeated bail approvals. “He is managing everyone. I am surprised the court keeps granting him bail,” he told PTI. He also alleged that their lawyer failed to file an objection to Asaram’s bail despite their requests.

Asaram, 86, was granted bail for ayurvedic ‘panchakarma’ treatment, which his lawyers claim requires more time. However, the survivor’s father pointed out that the godman has been traveling to multiple cities, questioning the seriousness of his medical condition.

In response to security concerns, Shahjahanpur police have deployed a guard, two gunmen, and installed CCTV cameras at the survivor’s residence. Authorities have assured continuous monitoring to ensure the family’s safety.

Asaram was convicted in 2018 under the POCSO Act for raping a 16-year-old girl at his Jodhpur ashram in 2013. He was also convicted in 2023 for raping a woman disciple in Ahmedabad.
