New Delhi, 17th Sept. Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday that the BJP-led NDA government aims to implement the ‘one nation, one election’ policy within its current term. Speaking at a press conference marking 100 days of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third consecutive term, Shah outlined the government’s plan to streamline electoral processes.
Shah, joined by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, reaffirmed the commitment to this key manifesto promise of the BJP. Prime Minister Modi had previously advocated for the ‘one nation, one election’ concept during his Independence Day speech, arguing that frequent elections disrupt the nation’s progress.
The proposal for simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, followed by synchronized local body elections, was endorsed by a high-level panel chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind earlier this year. This panel suggested starting with Lok Sabha and state assembly elections and then coordinating local body polls within 100 days.
The Law Commission is also expected to propose holding simultaneous elections for all three tiers of government—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies—beginning in 2029. This includes provisions for forming a unity government in case of a hung parliament or a no-confidence motion.
The Kovind panel has recommended 18 constitutional amendments, most of which do not require state assembly ratification but will need to be passed by Parliament. The panel has proposed creating an ‘Implementation Group’ to oversee the execution of these recommendations, though it did not set a specific timeline for rolling out simultaneous elections.
