Amethi, 5th Oct. Police shot Chandan Verma, accused of murdering an entire Dalit family in Amethi, in the leg early Saturday while recovering the weapon used in the crime. According to officials, the incident occurred near a canal track when Sub-Inspector Madan Kumar Singh was retrieving the pistol linked to the killings.

Verma reportedly grabbed Singh’s gun and fired at him, prompting Inspector Sachchidanand Rai to shoot in defence, hitting Verma in the right leg. Verma had been arrested Friday night near a toll plaza in Noida while attempting to flee to Delhi.

The victims, Sunil Kumar (35), a government school teacher, his wife Poonam (32), and their daughters Drishti (6) and Suni (1), were shot dead in Amethi’s Ahorwa Bhawani area. Poonam had previously filed a harassment complaint against Verma. Police seized a country-made pistol and a black Enfield Bullet used in the crime.

Verma was taken to Tiloi Community Health Centre for treatment.
