Chennai, 30th Dec. Actor-turned-politician Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi in Chennai today amidst widespread outrage over the sexual assault incident at Anna University. The assault of a second-year student on December 23 has sparked protests across Tamil Nadu, calling for justice and better security measures for women in educational institutions.
The incident, which occurred on the Anna University campus, led to the arrest of one individual, and four special police teams are investigating the matter. Protests organized by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Women Welfare Federation have been staged outside Anna University’s Guindy campus, demanding stringent actions and enhanced safety protocols for women.
Vijay, the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), condemned the incident as “deeply shocking and painful” in a statement shared on X. He expressed solidarity with the victim and urged for swift action.
The Madras High Court has intervened, setting up an all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) consisting of IPS officers Sneha Priya, Ayman Jamal, and Brinda to probe the case. The SIT will investigate both the assault and the leak of the victim’s FIR. The court has also ordered the Tamil Nadu government to provide Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the victim and ensure she receives free education, including boarding, lodging, and counseling.
Additionally, the High Court has issued a directive to the Tamil Nadu DGP, mandating stricter measures to prevent the leakage of FIRs in future sexual offence cases. This has heightened political pressure on the ruling DMK government.
BJP Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai staged a dramatic protest outside his home on Friday, symbolically whipping himself to protest what he described as the DMK’s “failure” to ensure women’s safety. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has dispatched a two-member fact-finding team to investigate the case and assess the government’s response to the issue.
