AAP and BJP Clash Over Delhi Power Audit

New Delhi, 3rd Oct. Union Minister and BJP leader Harsh Malhotra criticized the Delhi government on Thursday, calling it “laughable” that an audit is being conducted of the city’s power distribution companies, in which the government holds a 49 percent stake. This reaction follows Delhi Chief Minister Atishi’s directive for a special audit of power discoms to investigate the pension surcharge imposed on consumers.

In a statement, Malhotra, who represents East Delhi, alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is using the audit as a tactic to present a “clean” image to the public. He highlighted concerns about rising electricity bills, claiming that a monthly bill meant to be ₹100 often increases to ₹185 due to various additional charges, including the pension cess. He accused the AAP government of turning a blind eye to this “corruption” for ten years.

In response, the AAP defended its record, asserting that Delhi is the only state in India that provides 24/7 electricity supply, with the first 200 units consumed being free. This achievement, they said, is a result of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s model of governance.

AAP further criticized BJP-ruled states for enduring power cuts lasting up to eight hours or more, leading to high electricity bills despite the lack of service. They claimed the BJP is attempting to undermine AAP’s efforts for the people of Delhi through “baseless allegations.”
