“A Squirrel Has More Rights Than a Girl In Afghanistan,” Meryl Streep

Published:

“A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan today because the public parks have been closed to women and girls,” said actor Meryl Streep while highlighting the condition of women in Afghanistan during a discussion held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

During an event that focused on women’s rights in Afghanistan, The Academy Award winner said, “Today in Kabul, a female cat has more freedom than a woman. A cat may go sit on her front stoop and feel the sun on her face. She may chase a squirrel into the park.”

Streep spoke alongside Afghan activists and human rights defenders, who called on the UN to act to protect and restore the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. The actor called the current situation in Afghanistan “suffocating” for women.

“The international community, as a whole, if it came together, could effect change in Afghanistan and stop the slow suffocation of … half the population,” Streep added.

Streep’s comments come after the Taliban government last month introduced a new set of “morality laws”. Among the new reinforcements, the BBC reported that a rule stated that women’s voices should no longer be heard in public spaces.

Streep highlighted the severe restrictions, saying, “A bird may sing in Kabul, but a girl may not, and a woman may not in public.”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who attended the same event, said Afghanistan “will never take its rightful place on the global stage” without educated women and women in employment.
