Pune: In a development that has sparked widespread outrage and political uproar, a consulting gynaecologist at Pune’s Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital has tendered his resignation following the death of a pregnant woman who was allegedly denied admission due to non-payment of a ₹10 lakh deposit.
Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas, the obstetrician and gynaecologist at the center of the controversy, stepped down citing “tremendous mental pressure” arising from public anger, social media backlash, and threatening calls, according to the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar.
The incident pertains to the tragic death of Tanisha Bhise, wife of the personal secretary to BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe. Bhise, who was carrying twins, was reportedly refused admission at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital for not providing the demanded deposit. She later died at another medical facility after delivering twin daughters.
Dr. Kelkar stated that Dr. Ghaisas expressed concern in his resignation letter over the impact of the growing hostility on his ability to provide medical care and ensure his family’s safety. “He has decided to resign in order to prevent any injustice to his profession,” Kelkar said. The hospital has forwarded the resignation to its trustees for formal acceptance. Dr. Ghaisas is expected to complete his pending surgeries and consultations until Thursday.
Meanwhile, the incident has provoked political reactions. Members of the BJP’s women’s wing allegedly stormed the clinic run by Dr. Ghaisas’s mother in Pune’s Kothrud area last week and vandalized property. Police have confirmed the incident and are investigating.
The hospital has faced strong criticism over the alleged refusal to treat a critical patient based on financial grounds. The matter has raised serious ethical and legal questions surrounding emergency medical care and hospital policies.
