It has been a few weeks from hell for Atletico Madrid. Having nursed ambitions of a remarkable treble less than a month ago, Diego Simeone’s side are now left staring at a trophy-less season after Barcelona dumped them out of the Copa del Rey with a 1-0 win at the Metropolitano Stadium. The 5-4 aggregate loss means Atleti’s only [slim] hope of glory this season is in La Liga, where they now trail Barcelona by nine points with nine games remaining.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid have a six-point cushion over their city rivals
On December 21, 2024, Atletico went to the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona and won 2-1 with a late, late goal from Alexander Sorloth. But having led the table halfway through the campaign (19 games), Atletico have since lost three and drawn four in the league. One of the defeats was Barcelona’s incredible 4-2 comeback on March 16, a game Atletico looked to have in the bag when they led 2-0 after 72 minutes.
That setback, four days after a heartbreaking penalty shootout exit against Real in the Champions League round of 16, was a body blow, as were the two dropped points against Espanyol when league action resumed last weekend. This Cup loss, however, with the remarkable Lamine Yamal running the show, could knock the stuffing out of Atletico’s season. Champions League qualification is a near-certainty, but that will be little consolation for fans who were dreaming of far more just weeks ago.
