New Delhi, 16th Oct. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a major railway infrastructure project in Uttar Pradesh, encompassing the Varanasi-Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) multitracking and the construction of a new rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganga River. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 2,642 crore, with completion targeted within four years.
This initiative aims to enhance connectivity, ease of travel, and reduce congestion in one of the busiest railway sections in India. It will also help in streamlining supply chains by connecting previously unconnected areas, thereby boosting logistical efficiency and accelerating economic growth. The project is expected to generate direct employment for about 10 lakh human-days during the construction phase.
Project Highlights:
- Enhanced Capacity: The project includes the addition of 3rd and 4th railway lines, addressing the congestion in the Varanasi-DDU Junction route, a critical corridor for both passenger and freight traffic.
- Logistics and Economic Impact: With improved infrastructure, the project is set to facilitate the movement of 27.83 MTPA freight, supporting the transportation of key commodities like coal, cement, and foodgrains. This upgrade is crucial for managing the growing tourism and industrial demands in the region.
- Environmental Benefits: By minimizing logistics costs, the project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 149 crore kg, equivalent to planting 6 crore trees, supporting India’s climate goals.
- Boost to Regional Development: The project aligns with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on integrated planning and multi-modal connectivity. It is a key part of the vision for a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat), aiming to uplift the region through infrastructural growth and enhanced employment opportunities.
Covering the Varanasi and Chandauli districts, this project will expand the Indian Railways network by 30 km, bolstering the region’s socio-economic growth and ensuring smoother transportation for both people and goods. It also aligns with the vision of a New India by fostering development and self-reliance in the area.
