Shimla- An avalanche alert has been issued for several high-altitude areas in Himachal Pradesh over the next 24 hours, the Meteorological Department reported on Tuesday. A wet spell is expected to persist in the state until Friday.

The Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), Chandigarh, issued an orange alert (unsafe conditions) for areas above 2,850 metres in Chamba and above 2,900 metres in Lahaul and Spiti. A yellow alert (partly unsafe conditions) was issued for Kullu and Kinnaur (both above 2,900 metres), while Shimla district received a green alert (isolated instability).
The weather remained mostly dry over the past 24 hours, with Pandoh recording 3.5 mm of rain and Chamba and Dalhousie witnessing one cm of rainfall each. Thunderstorms were observed in Kangra, and the Met office has forecasted light rain and snow at isolated places in Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, and the higher reaches of Chamba from Wednesday to Friday.
In terms of temperatures, Tabo recorded the coldest night at -8°C, while Dhaulakuan in Sirmaur district experienced the warmest day at 30.3°C.
From March 1 to 18, Himachal Pradesh recorded 75.3 mm of rainfall, surpassing the normal 67.7 mm for this period — marking an 11% excess. Authorities have advised residents and tourists in high-risk areas to exercise caution and stay updated on weather alerts.
