Two fighter jets from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) were deployed on Tuesday night to escort an Air India Express plane after a bomb threat was reported during its journey from Madurai to Singapore. The aircraft, operating flight IX 684, safely landed at Changi Airport around 10:04 PM.
The incident unfolded after Air India Express received an email warning of a bomb onboard the flight, triggering a swift response from Singapore’s air defense systems. Singapore’s Defence Minister, Ng Eng Hen, confirmed the details in a series of posts on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “Two of our RSAF F-15SGs scrambled and escorted the plane away from populated areas.”

Ground-Based Air Defence (GBAD) systems were also activated, along with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, ensuring all necessary precautions were in place as the aircraft made its descent. Once the plane landed, it was immediately handed over to airport police for further investigation.
As of now, there has been no official statement from Air India Express regarding the number of passengers onboard or the nature of the threat. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Ng Eng Hen praised the professionalism of the SAF and Singapore’s Home Team, saying, “the dedication and professionalism of our SAF and Home Team that keep us safe in our homes, even when threats exist around us.”
