Dehradun, 15th Oct. The Election Commission of India has announced that the bypoll for the Kedarnath Assembly seat in Uttarakhand will take place on November 20. The seat fell vacant following the death of MLA Shaila Rawat in July. Rawat, who won the seat as a BJP candidate in the 2022 assembly elections, previously represented Kedarnath as a Congress MLA in 2012. She lost the seat in 2017 but made a comeback in 2022.
Located in Rudraprayag district, the Kedarnath seat is part of the Pauri Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency, currently held by the BJP. Additional Chief Election Officer Vijay Kumar Jogdande stated that the notification for the bypoll will be issued on October 22, with October 29 set as the last date for filing nominations. Nomination scrutiny will take place on October 30, and the last date for withdrawal is November 4. Counting of votes will occur on November 23.
With the model code of conduct now in effect in the district, it will remain in force until November 25. Pradesh BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt welcomed the announcement, expressing confidence in replicating the party’s successful performances in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.
He claimed that the BJP is poised to win the seat with a record number of votes, attributing their potential success to the historic work done by the “double engine government” in the constituency. Bhatt emphasized the party’s preparedness for the polls, highlighting the active involvement of its booth and Panna committees established during the Lok Sabha elections.
