New Delhi: A heated exchange broke out in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as BJP leaders strongly objected to remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, demanding that he issue an apology for his statements regarding the Speaker.
The confrontation occurred during discussions on the National Education Policy (NEP) when Kharge criticized the absence of the Education Minister in the morning session and requested additional time to speak. The Chair denied his request, prompting visible frustration from the Congress President.
As Kharge continued speaking, the Speaker attempted to intervene, leading to sharp words from the senior Congress leader. BJP National President JP Nadda was quick to react, stating, “It is very unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition is using this kind of language for the Chair.”
Kharge’s ‘Dictatorship’ Remark Sparks Outrage
As tensions escalated, Kharge accused the government of suppressing opposition voices, saying, “This is dictatorship.” His remark infuriated BJP lawmakers, who condemned it as disrespectful.
Nadda immediately urged the Speaker to take action, insisting that Kharge retract his words and issue a formal apology. He stated, “The dignity of the Chair must be upheld. Such remarks from the Leader of the Opposition are unacceptable.”
Kharge Attempts Clarification, BJP Unmoved
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Kharge clarified that his remarks were aimed at the government’s policies, not the Speaker personally.
“I apologize for my comments… My remarks were directed at the government’s policies, not the Speaker. I apologize to you, but not to the government,” he said.
However, BJP leaders were not satisfied, maintaining that Kharge’s language was inappropriate and demanding a full and unconditional apology.
Nadda reiterated the party’s stance, saying, “The language he used and the aspersions he cast on the Chair are unacceptable. He must apologize in full.”
With tensions running high, the session witnessed continued disruptions, marking yet another day of heated parliamentary debates between the ruling and opposition parties.
