New Delhi: The Maharashtra Assembly has been at the center of a political storm following the suspension of Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi over his controversial remarks glorifying Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Azmi, a known firebrand politician, found himself in the eye of the storm after he eulogized Aurangzeb, falsely claiming that Bharat’s economy thrived under his rule and that the country’s borders extended to Afghanistan and Myanmar. His remarks, widely condemned as an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, resulted in his suspension from the Maharashtra Assembly for the entire Budget Session, which runs until March 26, 2025.

His statements, seen as an attempt to rewrite history and distort facts, have not only sparked political outrage but also led to legal consequences, with an FIR registered against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The controversy raises critical questions about political opportunism, historical manipulation, and the use of communal sentiments in modern-day politics.

The Controversial Statement That Led to Abu Azmi’s Suspension

During a debate in the Maharashtra Assembly, Abu Azmi made the bold claim that under Aurangzeb’s reign, Bharat was at its economic peak, contributing 24% of the world’s GDP and earning the title of a “golden sparrow.” His assertion that Aurangzeb’s empire stretched from Afghanistan to Myanmar was seen as an attempt to glorify one of the most polarizing figures in Bharatiya history, ignoring the brutality, religious persecution, and regressive policies that defined his rule.

This remark provoked an immediate backlash from the ruling Mahayuti coalition, with BJP and Shiv Sena MLAs strongly condemning his words. State Minister Chandrakant Patil moved a resolution for Azmi’s suspension, arguing that his praise for Aurangzeb was a direct insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who fought against Mughal oppression. The motion was passed by a voice vote, leading to Azmi’s immediate expulsion from the Assembly for the remainder of the session.

Backlash and Political Reactions

Azmi’s comments sent shockwaves across the political spectrum, with leaders from BJP, Shiv Sena, and MNS slamming him for his pro-Mughal stance. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called the remarks an insult to the Maratha pride and Maharashtra’s rich history, emphasizing that glorifying Aurangzeb is unacceptable in a state where Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy is revered.

BJP leaders accused Azmi of intentionally stoking communal tensions and using historical revisionism for political gain. Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MP Naresh Mhaske went a step further and filed an FIR against Azmi, alleging that his statements were designed to provoke unrest and insult the sentiments of the majority community.

On the other hand, Samajwadi Party and Congress leaders came to Azmi’s defense, claiming that his words were taken out of context. Some opposition members alleged that the BJP-led government was using the controversy to divert attention from governance issues. However, even within the opposition ranks, there was no unanimous support for Azmi, with many leaders choosing to distance themselves from his remarks.

The Apology That Came Too Late

Realizing the gravity of the backlash, Azmi issued a public apology, stating that his comments were misinterpreted. In a video posted on social media, he claimed:

“My words have been twisted. I only reiterated what historians and writers have documented about Aurangzeb. I did not make any derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj or Sambhaji Maharaj. However, if my statement has hurt anyone’s sentiments, I take it back.”

Despite his attempts to backtrack, his apology failed to convince the ruling party and the public, as many saw it as a damage-control move rather than a genuine retraction.

The Legal Case Against Abu Azmi

Apart from his suspension from the Assembly, Azmi now faces legal trouble with an FIR registered against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for hurting religious sentiments. Initially lodged at Naupada Police Station in Thane, the case was later transferred to Marine Drive Police Station in Mumbai, given the sensitive nature of the remarks and their location within the state legislature.

Police officials confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway, and if found guilty, Azmi could face legal consequences ranging from fines to possible imprisonment.

Why Aurangzeb Remains a Controversial Figure in Bharatiya History

Aurangzeb’s legacy is one of the most contentious in Bharatiya history. While some historians acknowledge his military conquests, he is widely criticized for his religious bigotry, destruction of temples, oppressive jizya tax on Hindus, and the execution of Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur. His persecution of Hindus, Marathas, and Sikhs cemented his reputation as a tyrannical ruler who sought to impose Islamic supremacy in a culturally diverse Bharat.

In contrast, Shivaji Maharaj is celebrated as a symbol of resistance against Mughal rule, known for his valor, strategic acumen, and commitment to Swarajya (self-rule). Similarly, Sambhaji Maharaj, his son, was tortured and executed by Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam, making him one of the greatest Hindu martyrs in Bharatiya history.

Given this historical context, Azmi’s attempt to glorify Aurangzeb was bound to invite backlash in Maharashtra, where Maratha pride and Shivaji’s legacy are deeply revered.

The Dangerous Politics of Historical Distortion

Azmi’s remarks are not just an isolated incident but part of a larger trend in Bharatiya politics, where historical distortion is used as a tool to manipulate narratives. Over the years, politicians across parties have selectively interpreted history to fit their ideological and electoral goals.

His glorification of Aurangzeb appears to be a deliberate attempt to appease a section of his voter base, while disregarding historical facts and the sensitivities of the majority community. However, this dangerous game of identity politics only serves to divide communities and provoke unnecessary controversies.

History should be studied with objectivity, not used as a pawn in political battles. If leaders continue to distort facts for political gain, it sets a harmful precedent, leading to communal tensions and deepening divisions within society.

Conclusion: Lessons from the Abu Azmi Controversy

The suspension of Abu Azmi from the Maharashtra Assembly is a strong message that attempts to distort history and glorify oppressive rulers will not be tolerated. While free speech is a fundamental right, political leaders must exercise responsibility in their statements, especially when dealing with historical figures who evoke strong sentiments.

His apology and retraction did little to undo the damage, as the controversy has already exposed the fault lines in political discourse. Moving forward, politicians must learn to engage with history responsibly, ensuring that their statements foster unity rather than division.

With an ongoing legal case and continued political fallout, the Abu Azmi controversy is far from over. As Maharashtra prepares for upcoming elections, this incident could have a lasting impact on the political landscape, influencing party strategies and voter sentiment in the months ahead.
