Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer has revealed plans for a groundbreaking leap in aviation, a fully autonomous aircraft where passengers may sit in the cockpit, simply because there won’t be a pilot. The futuristic jet, designed to be controlled entirely by artificial intelligence (AI), was unveiled at the National Business Aviation Association event in Orlando, Florida, in partnership with Bombardier.
This innovative concept ditches the traditional cockpit, making way for an open lounge area in the front of the plane. The concept we presented was a fully autonomous aircraft, eliminating the need for a cockpit and enabling new cabin configurations such as a forward lounge, an Embraer spokesperson shared with the media.
One of the key pillars of the design is sustainability, with plans to use green propulsion systems powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), electrification, or hydrogen.
The aircraft’s interior is divided into three sections, offering a spacious and futuristic feel. One of the standout features is the integration of the cockpit area into the passenger lounge, thanks to the absence of a human pilot. The plane’s interior will also boast touchscreen windows, adding to the cutting-edge experience.
Embraer’s design is also a departure from traditional jets. The engines are stacked vertically, with air intakes strategically placed above and on the sides of the fuselage, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. The plane is further distinguished by its sleek V-tail design and twin turbofan engines positioned at the tail.
While the concept of a fully autonomous jet may seem like a glimpse into the distant future, Embraer clarified that the aircraft is currently more of an inspiration than an active project. The company aims to spark innovation and discussions around the potential of autonomous aviation, rather than focusing on immediate production.
However, they are not alone in this endeavor. Other aviation companies, such as Cirrus and HondaJet, are also working on developing autonomous features for aircraft, potentially making Embraer’s vision of pilotless planes a reality sooner than expected.
