According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a cabinet committee meeting on security over the crisis in West Asia.
The meeting reportedly focused on the implications of the conflict on trade and supply of petroleum products.
The committee comprised of the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Defence Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Finance Minister and the National Security Adviser. They discussed the fresh hostilities in the Middle East and the sharp escalation after Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel.
Describing the recent developments in West Asia as “deeply concerning”, the cabinet committee delved upon various issues arising from the ongoing and widening crisis.
The key issues discussed were the impact on trade, navigation, and supply chains – especially the supply of oil, petroleum, and its products.
On Tuesday, External affairs minister, voiced his apprehension regarding the current crisis in the Middle East during his address at the Carnegie Endowment in the United States. He suggested that India could play a role in facilitating communication between Israel and Iran amidst the challenging circumstances. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s position on the matter, referring to the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel as a “terrorist attack”.
