In an effort to prevent a growing regional conflict, the United States and its Western allies are working behind the scenes to temper Israel’s military response to a significant missile strike launched by Iran. The attack, which occurred on Tuesday and involved nearly 200 ballistic missiles targeting Israel, has raised concerns of a potential escalation across the Middle East.
While the US has firmly backed Israel’s right to defend itself, President Joe Biden and his administration have been actively engaging with Israeli leaders, advising caution in their response. According to US officials, Washington supports Israel’s need for military action but stresses the importance of avoiding steps that could trigger a broader war in the region.
On Wednesday, Biden held a virtual meeting with the leaders of the G7 nations to discuss coordinated sanctions on Tehran, aiming to hold Iran accountable for its missile aggression. The discussions also focused on guiding Israel’s next move to ensure it does not inflame an already tense situation.
Despite his strong condemnation of the missile strike, Biden signaled that he does not endorse Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in response to the attack. The US is urging Israel to avoid targeting sensitive sites that could provoke a devastating regional conflict.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a high-level security meeting at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv on Wednesday to assess the situation. Netanyahu’s government has vowed a robust response to the Iranian strike.
