New Delhi, 3rd Oct. In a major relief for spiritual leader Sadhguru, the Supreme Court today paused a Madras High Court order directing Tamil Nadu police to investigate cases against his Isha Foundation. The top court took over the case and requested a status report from the police.
The case arose from a petition by retired professor S Kamaraj, who alleged that his daughters, Geeta and Lata, were “brainwashed” into residing at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore and were restricted from contacting their family. Isha Foundation denied these claims, stating the two women, aged 42 and 39, were living there willingly. The women were later produced in the high court, where they confirmed this.
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, hearing the foundation’s challenge to the high court’s order, expressed concerns over the police’s heavy-handed approach, stating, “The first thing is that you cannot let an army of police in the establishment like this.”
He suggested a judicial officer visit the premises to speak to the women. One of the women appeared virtually before the court, reiterating her willingness to stay at the ashram and alleging harassment from her father for the past eight years.
The Supreme Court decided to speak with the women privately and later confirmed that they had been staying at the ashram out of their own free will since the ages of 24 and 27.
The case also includes a recent incident involving a doctor at the ashram, who was charged under the POCSO Act, which the court said must still be investigated.
The top court will continue to monitor the investigation and has asked the police to submit a detailed status report.
