Chennai, 29th Sept. In a key cabinet reshuffle on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister, marking a notable elevation amid increasing calls within the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for his promotion. The decision comes as the ruling party eyes the upcoming 2026 Assembly polls, with party members considering the 46-year-old Udhayanidhi a potential future Chief Minister.
The reshuffle also saw the return of V. Senthil Balaji to the council of ministers just two days after securing bail in a money laundering case, reflecting the party’s strategic moves as it prepares for the elections. Udhayanidhi, the son of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and grandson of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, has been actively involved in both politics and the film industry, where he has produced and starred in several popular Tamil films.
According to a release from Raj Bhavan, Chief Minister Stalin recommended Udhayanidhi for the additional portfolio of Planning and Development, alongside his current roles in Youth Welfare and Sports Development. The reshuffle was characterized by excitement among DMK leaders and supporters, with many envisioning Udhayanidhi as a key figure in the party’s future leadership.
The cabinet changes also included the dismissal of T. Mano Thangaraj from the Milk and Dairy Development portfolio and the reassignment of several other ministers. Balaji’s reinstatement was anticipated following his bail from the Supreme Court, where he had been incarcerated for over 15 months related to the Enforcement Directorate’s case.
The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Ravi, approved the Chief Minister’s recommendations, and the swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed ministers is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 PM at the Raj Bhavan. This reshuffle is seen as a strategic move by the DMK to consolidate its leadership and prepare for the political challenges ahead.
