Tensions in the Middle East escalated further as Israel launched air strikes on Hezbollah’s headquarters in the southern region of Beirut, Lebanon’s capital on Friday. The strikes, which were heard across the city, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky above the densely populated area.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that they had conducted a targeted strike on Hezbollah’s central headquarters, describing the action as necessary to ensure the safety and security of Israeli families. Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the IDF, stated that the operation was carried out to protect Israeli citizens and allow them to live in peace within their homes.
“Moments ago, the Israel Defense Forces carried out a precise strike on the Central Headquarters of the Hezbollah terror organization…taking the necessary action to protect our people so that Israeli families can live in their homes, safely and securely.”

The attack came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered an address to the UN General Assembly in New York. In his speech, Netanyahu vowed to continue military operations against Hezbollah and to fight “until victory” in the broader conflict with Hamas.
Both Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in a series of retaliatory strikes. Earlier this week, Israel’s aerial bombardment of Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon resulted in about 700 deaths.
